Concept | Fragments Studio

My project is centered around creating one object : buttons. Materials used are waste and biodegradable ingredients. During the Fabricademy course, I focused on testing biomaterials in the shape of a button with the same expectations as a commercial button (resistance to water and heat).

I chose buttons because I believe the stress on raw material is not distributed equally across available resources, with a predominance of dependence on plastic-based products. My approach is material driven because in the context of circular designs, I want to challenge the status quo and explore whether it is possible to rely on waste and biodegradable ingredients to create objects.

The fashion industry has made tremendous efforts regarding fabric recyclability and organic production; however, trims and accessories have largely been left out of this effort to produce better. I believe the ecosystem of upcycling brands, environmentally and socially responsible brands, as well as fabrics suppliers goes well hand in hand with biomaterial button suppliers. Such as Fragments Studio.

5 Ws who, what, when, where, why

how is what you will start defining in your process pages

who

This is for :

- fashion brands that find value in sustainability such as brands showing collections at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

- high end fabric stores that want to offer more than fabrics to their dear customers.

- small upcycling designers.

what

Creative studio specialized in material research with a focus on waste streams transformation through craftsmanship. It offers a broad range of small decorative and functional objects for clothing such as buttons or pins. Both bulk and custom-made orders can be placed. The words “Fragments” come from the multi faceted aspect of material origin and use. Each material holds a past, but when assembled together, their fragments of old stories start to create a new one. It’s a creative studio with a poetic and nostalgic approach.

when

Starting in June 2025 at the Sustainable Angle Textile Fair.

where

Located in the heart of Europe, between countries celebrating local know-how (France, Ireland) and resilient and progressive businesses (Scandinavian research).

why

The reason for the existence of Fragments Studio is to use its creative approach towards local waste streams. Therefore reducing local downcycling dynamics thanks to increasing the value of waste.

Vision - a plastic free world and maximum reuse of post-production and post-consumer use with a local approach for design features such as colors. Mission - to offer a broad range of materials to open up market share to things other than plastic-based products and far away production. Beliefs - thanks to a scientific and design led approach, we can start extending the use of existing resources that are discarded and downcycled.

how

1- Capturing local waste and building long-lasting relationships to be able to do small batches of production with an industrial mindset (as opposed to unique waste for a unique object that can not be replicated) 2- Transforming waste into design objects 3- Techniques inventory and materials cookbook with private recipes 3- Selling high value objects to the luxury sector
