(UN)ROOTED¶
CONCEPT¶
Unrooted is an interactive art installation exploring the contemporary meaning of rootedness and belonging in an age of mobility, digital interconnection, and shifting identities. The work invites participants to reflect on how a sense of grounding can emerge even in constant movement.
The project is created through a participatory process. Participants answer a short questionnaire about their personal sense of belonging. Their responses are translated into individual parametric designs, which are used to produce custom laser-cut molds. Using these molds, participants grow roots from cat grass and barley over a period of ten days.
After the growing process, the pieces are returned and assembled into a large, quilt-like installation composed of many interconnected root structures. Each element reflects an individual experience of belonging while becoming part of a collective form.
The installation also includes interactive sensors that activate a projection of growing seeds when visitors approach the root structure, allowing the work to respond to presence and touch.
By combining organic growth, digital design, and collective participation, Unrooted visualizes how personal experiences of belonging intertwine to form shared networks of connection.
