Plastic pollution

Scary facts about plastic pollution:

-About 8 million metric tone of plastic enter the ocean per year, it is also like saying that 1 garbage truck is dumped in the ocean every minute.

-More than 1,000,000 seabirds and more than 100,000 marine mammals are killed from plastic every year.

-By the year of 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

My idea

For this project I was inspired by the ocean pollution. I decide to make a module of a fish and using bioplastic as my material to symbolize one of problems of plastic pollution in the ocean, marine mammals that are killed from plastic. I also added two holes in the neck area of my fish to pass and attach some recycled plastic bags to intensify the problems.

What is Modular Fashion?

It is an approach to the production of garments and accessories using vector graphic (lines, curves, polygons... that are generated by computer and follow the x and y axis reference) designs of 2D laser cut modules. They are then interlocked to create complexe 3D seamless geometries.

Brands that use Modular Fashion

Post-Couture and Make/use are brands ...... you buy your .ai or .dxf file with the pattern, you take the fabric that you want and go to your nearest fablab/makerspaace and laser cut your design in few minutes.

Creating the module

To create your modules you should first experiment with scisors and paper and then you can use Rhino or Illustrator to create your 2D file. I used Rhino because I am more used to it and I can practice more. To get ideas for creating your model you can look at Tesselation Geometry: Geometries infinity replicated without interfering. I realized when I designed the fish model and I arrayed it that there was a kind of flower form in the place that was not used. I decided to create a second module

Tips to design your module

• Use Boolean Operation to draw irregular shapes

• Use fillet when cutting so it is more resistent

• Make 2 mm circles in the cut parts to make them stronger

• Remember that laser erodes materials

• Thickness and colour of material should be considered

• Do not cut PVC materials

Laser cut steps - SPEEDY 400TM

To cut

  1. Turn on extraction
  2. Turn on machine and it will do the homing
  3. In your computer open your file on Rhino and move it to 0.0
  4. Go to print -> Adjustment -> Put the size of your material -> Set and move the paper to 0.0 and make sure your scale is 1x1 -> Print
  5. Connect to printer
  6. Choose the kind of material in this case Paper/Cardboard
  7. Go to parameters -> select and change what you Cut/Engrave/Ignore and the Speed/Power
  8. Back to the laser cuting machine, after the homing the bed will go down so you will have to move it by pressing the up button
  9. Then you focus: Set your material where you want on the bed -> Move your head to the middle of your material -> Take the focus tool and put it on the head -> Move the bed up until the focus tool falls

For image

  1. Turn on extraction
  2. Turn on machine and it will do the homing
  3. In your computer open your file on Rhino -> Move it to 0.0 -> Hatch to fill your models -> Delete the CRV to leave only the hatch
  4. Go to print -> Adjustment -> Put the size of your material -> Set and move the paper to 0.0 and make sure your scale is 1x1 -> Select Black & White -> Ruster
  5. Connect to printer
  6. Choose the kind of material in this case Paper/Cardboard
  7. Go to parameters -> select engrave for everything -> Select speed/power

Useful tips:

  • If there is too much smoke, clean the lens
  • If it does not cut, you may have to make it 2D
  • Print Settings of Rhino: Vector to cut and Ruster for image
  • If it does not cut well you might have to lesser the speed
