Digital Bodies🧍🏻‍♀️

Session Nutshell 🌰🐚

Week one at Fabri was a blast! 🎉 I got to present my Fabri website, and let me tell you, I was both excited and super nervous. But guess what? My review went amazing! I even got the best compliment ever: “Emerging Queen of Documentation!” 👑 It made all the hard work worth it, and I felt so proud!

With that win, I was totally pumped for week two, ready to dive into 3D software and laser cutting! 🖥️✨

This week's focus was on "digital bodies," and it was absolutely fascinating! We explored different ways to look at the human body through:

Human proportions: From the Egyptian Grid System to the Vitruvian Man 🏛️, Le Corbusier’s Modulor II 📏, and of course, Michelangelo’s David 🗿.

Ergonomics: Applying human factors like psychology and physiology to design.

Anthropometry: Measuring and analyzing human physical traits, from strength to size. 💪

Biometrics: How we use human data for authentication and beyond!

Alt text for the image

From body stereotypes to virtual tailoring, we even touched on the world’s first digital supermodel! 😍 I was also introduced to brands like The Fabricant, NFT fashion, and digital couture tech—such cool stuff! We viewed incredible artistic expressions of the body, and I especially loved the works of Antony Gormley –, David Černý and Claudia Fontes.

Alt text for the image

The history of prosthetics and how artists turned them into expressive extensions! I was Mind blown! 🧠💥

Alt text for the image

Then we got into the digital fabrication process, learned about different 3D modeling methods, and softwares, I was most excited about exploring Blender MakeHuman and Mixamo 💻🎨

We wrapped up by checking out some stunning student projects, with works by Sara Alvarez and Saskia Helinska really standing out for me. 👏 And, of course, we ended with a brief on our next assignment... let’s go! 🎯

Assignment Deep Dive 📝

Digital Bodies

After exploring the assessment criteria from the Fabricademy website.

Alt text for the image Alt text for the image

In both the global session and via an insightful talk with my internal mentor, Mina, two phrases really hit me hard. In the global session, someone said, "The body is the canvas of the tailor," 🎨✂️ and during Mina's session, she asked, "What does the word body mean to you?" 🤔 Both questions really stayed with me and got me thinking deeply about what body truly means to me.

Honestly, I’ve always been super conscious of my own body. 🙈 I tend to overanalyze myself—especially my weight—which has been a constant yo-yo 🎢, and maintaining what I think is my "ideal" body weight has been a real challenge. So, when Mina asked that powerful question, the first thing that popped into my head was shapes. 🔺⚪️🔷

Alt text for the image Image Credit healthline

But as the conversation went on and I reflected more. another phrase came to mind: Your body is your temple. ⛩️ That thought sparked the inspiration for my project! 🔥

Concept 💡

Given my love for sketching Lord Shiva 🕉️, the concept of temples, and my brand logo for The Doodleist—which features a lion 🦁 along with mermaids 🧜‍♀️ and goddesses 🧝‍♀️—I decided to merge all these elements. My idea was to create a fierce goddess, with my lion logo subtly blending into her face, inspired by the Indian god Narasimha, who has the face of a lion. 🦁✨

Alt text for the image

My concept is to embody the fierceness and strength of women 💪, much like the goddess Kali 🖤, combined with the lion’s confidence and bravery (from my logo). At the same time, I wanted to capture the delicacy and beauty of being a woman, which I felt was best represented by mythical mermaids. 🧜‍♀️🌊 This project feels deeply personal and empowering, blending symbolism, strength, and the beauty of the feminine in ways that reflect my own journey. 🛤️👩‍🎨 It’s all about embracing the power, grace, and magic that lies within! 💫👑

A few references that stood out for me from a production point of view

Alt text for the image

Once I had my moodboard and basic concept ready, I started sketching out some thumbnail ideas and figuring out my production process.

Alt text for the image

My first priority now was to figure out the softwares.

Understanding Softwares 🧠

The softwares I experimented with

  1. Kiri (Mobile App) 📱 Kiri is like the magic wand of 3D scanning. You point your phone at something, and BAM! It turns your object into a 3D model. You could scan your coffee cup, your sneakers, or even your pet (if they stay still long enough!) and bring them into the digital world.

  2. MeshMixer🧩 MeshMixer is the creative doctor for 3D models. Got a model that needs some tweaking? This tool lets you fix, sculpt, and remix your models like a pro. It’s perfect for when you want to Frankenstein different parts together or repair a broken 3D scan.

  3. Blender🌀 No, not the one you make smoothies with! Blender is the powerhouse of 3D design software. It's perfect for creating everything from simple models to Hollywood-level animations. You can sculpt, paint, animate, and even make movie-like special effects. Your imagination’s the only limit!

  4. MakeHuman🧍 Ever wanted to build your own human? MakeHuman is your virtual mannequin generator. You can adjust every detail—height, weight, facial features—to create your perfect digital human model. It’s like The Sims, but way more customizable.

  5. TinkerCad🎨: TinkerCad is 3D modeling’s version of a coloring book—super beginner-friendly and fun! It’s drag-and-drop, so you can create cool things like toys, jewelry, and prototypes without needing a degree in 3D design. Perfect for dipping your toes into the 3D world.

  6. Slicer🍰: A slicer isn’t for cake (sadly), but it’s equally satisfying. It takes your 3D design and cuts it into layers—so your 3D printer knows exactly how to build it up, one tiny layer at a time. Think of it as turning your masterpiece into a step-by-step instruction guide for your printer.

  7. Mixamo🕺: Mixamo is your go-to tool for breathing life into your 3D characters. Want your model to dance, run, or do a backflip? With just a few clicks, Mixamo gives your characters professional-looking animations. It's like having a dance party in 3D land!

  8. EXScan Pro 📷: EXScan Pro is your 3D scanner’s best friend. It helps you capture detailed scans of real-world objects and convert them into digital models. You can scan things like statues or car parts and use the digital version for designing, modifying, or printing. It’s like copying the real world into your computer!

  9. Laser Cutter 🔥: The laser cutter is a cutting-edge tool—literally! It uses a high-powered laser beam to slice through materials like wood, plastic, or fabric with pinpoint accuracy. Think of it as a lightsaber for making intricate designs or cutting out parts for your project.

  10. 3D Printer 🖨️: A 3D printer is like having a mini factory on your desk! It builds up layers of material (like plastic or resin) to create a real-life version of your digital design. From toys to tools to even clothes, if you can imagine it, you can print it!

Now that I know what each software does, I move onto experimenting with my main concept through experimentation

Experimentation Phase 🎨✨

Kiri 📱

I kicked off by diving into the Kiri app to get a feel for how it works. I absolutely loved how easy it was to scan objects—I used a Minion toy as my test subject, and it was super fun! 🧸📸 insert image here

Once I got comfortable with Kiri, I decided to take it for a spin around campus with my awesome FabriAcademy buddy, Gunjan, and an enthusiastic student, Yuvika, who was more than excited to help us with the scan! 👫🔍

Alt text for the image

How Kiri Works:

  1. Download the app and log in. ✅
  2. Tap the plus icon ➕ and select Photo Scan.
  3. You have three modes to choose from:

Photo mode: Manually take pictures while rotating your object/moving around it. 📷

Video mode: Record a video as you rotate the object or walk around it. 🎥

Seconds mode: You can use a timer to automate the clicks at intervals while moving freehand. ⏱️

  1. Take between 20-100 photos for a good quality scan.
  2. Select the photos, upload the project, and choose your rendering options. 📤
  3. Wait for it to process (queue it up ⏳), and voilà! You’ve got a 3D model of your object.

You can even email the file to yourself and choose the file type based on the software you want to use! 💌 And just like that, you've got a 3D-scanned render ready to play with! 🖥️

Alt text for the image Alt text for the image

MeshMixer 🧩

Next up was MeshMixer, where things got really fun! I experimented with my 3D render, smoothing out surfaces like a pro. However, my body scan looked more like a Roman ruin 🏛️, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the process!

Alt text for the image

How To Smooth on MeshMixer:

  1. Open MeshMixer and import your file.

Alt text for the image

  1. Click on Sculpt > Brushes > Robust Sculpt.

Alt text for the image

  1. Go over your object with the brush, and watch the magic happen! 🪄✨ Alt text for the image

  2. To save your work for Blender, go to File > Export > Name your file > Select saving destination > Choose the file format > Save!

Alt text for the image

MeshMixer made it super easy to polish my 3D render! Even if my object looked like an ancient artifact, smoothing it out was a blast! ⚒️

Blender 🌀

Blender was a whole new adventure! The interface looks intense at first (definitely intimidating!), so to avoid being completely overwhelmed, I checked out a few videos from CG Cookies Blender Basics Tutorials to get familiar with the software. I went through the first eight videos while crying internally😭😭 —because yes, I was doing this at 2 AM! 😅🌙

My Blender Experiment with the Digital Body Project 🦁✨

I recently dived into Blender to experiment with my digital body project. It was such a creative and fun experience to work with the 3D girl object and a lion face I had previously downloaded.

Here’s a breakdown of my process:

1.Basic Experiment – Lion Face on the Girl's Face 🦁➡️👧 First, I went with the most straightforward approach: simply placing the lion's face on the girl's face. It was a starting point, but pretty basic—nothing too exciting. Alt text for the image

2.Exploring the Lion's Mane on the Girl's Head 🦁✨👧 Then, I had a more creative idea: masking out the lion's face and adding only the lion's mane to the girl's head. I really liked how this turned out—it gave the girl a wild, majestic look, which resonated with me.

Alt text for the image

To remove the lion's head I went to Edit Mode Alt text for the image

With the selection tool, selected the verticies and deleted them Alt text for the image

Then fused the lion head with the girl's head by simply dragging

Alt text for the image

3.Half Human, Half Lion 👩🏻🦁 Next, I tried creating a half-human, half-lion face. This option was intriguing, and although I liked it a lot, I felt limited by my current skills in taking it further the way I had envisioned. But it definitely sparked ideas! Check out the Split Mesh Tutorial to know how I sliced my objects on blender

Alt text for the image

Moving Forward with the Lion's Mane Concept 🌟🦁👧

Alt text for the image

I ultimately decided to go with the second option—the lion’s mane on the girl’s face. To take it a step further, I brought in elements from The Doodleist logo using Illustrator to see how it would fit into the design. I liked how everything was coming together!

I chose this as my final concept because it aligns with my initial idea of merging The Doodleist logo with the concept of a goddess, symbolizing power, creativity, and transformation. 🏆✨

After I got the basics down, I ventured into installing the laser slicer tool in Blender.

How To Install the Laser Slicer Tool in Blender:

  1. Open Blender.

Alt text for the image

  1. Go to Edit > Preferences.

Alt text for the image

  1. Click on the small arrow at the top and select Install from Disk. 💾

Alt text for the image

  1. Choose the downloaded slicer plugin (Pro tip: keep the file zipped! Do NOT unzip it).

EXScan Pro 📷

I was super excited to get my hands on the EXScan Pro available on campus! This scanner is seriously cool and felt like stepping into some high-tech futuristic gadget. My colleague, Gunjan, and I teamed up to scan each other and see what this amazing machine could do. 🤖🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️

We used the handheld scanning technique, which was a fun challenge. We scanned everything from our bodies to our hands, experimenting to see how precise the machine was. What I learned pretty quickly was that the handheld technique is super sensitive to even the tiniest movement! 🤏 Unfortunately, we didn’t have a stand to stabilize things, which made it even trickier.

Despite that, the quality of the scans was top-notch—very high-res! However, I have to admit, the process took a lot longer than I expected, especially compared to the Kiri mobile scanner. ⏳ While the quality difference between EXScan and Kiri is huge, the app just felt so much more convenient for quick scans. But hey, you can’t rush perfection, right?

Here are the steps I followed (and some cool snapshots of the process):

  1. Set up the EXScan Pro: Make sure your scanning environment is stable and well-lit! Alt text for the image

  2. Handheld Scanning: Move around the object (or person!) slowly, keeping steady (which was very hard to do) to avoid blur. 🎥 Alt text for the image

  3. Body & Hand Scanning: We experimented with scanning full bodies and individual hands to test the scanner's precision. 👐 Alt text for the image Alt text for the image

  4. Quality Check: We checked the high-res results and compared them to mobile scans. The details were amazing, but the process took time!

  5. Save & Export: Once satisfied, save the scan and export it to use with your 3D software of choice! 💾

Laser cutter 🔥:

The laser cutter is like having a lightsaber at your fingertips! 🔥⚔️ This high-powered tool uses a precision laser beam to slice through materials like wood, plastic, and fabric with absolute accuracy. Whether you’re creating intricate designs or cutting out parts for a project, this machine is a total game-changer! It’s so cool watching it work—it feels like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. 🌟 Alt text for the image

Before diving in, the team at Fab Lab gave us an awesome walkthrough on how the laser cutter works. They explained all the settings and tips to make sure we were ready to use it safely and effectively. The demo was super helpful, and I felt much more confident getting started! 🛠️✨

Here’s how I got started with the laser cutter:

  1. Prepare Your Design: First, I prepped my design in a vector file format (like SVG or DXF). You need to make sure your design is compatible with the laser cutter software, so everything’s ready for cutting. ✏️💻 Alt text for the image

  2. Choose Your Material: I used a 3-ply corrugated cardboard for my project, which is sturdy yet lightweight—perfect for laser cutting. 📦✨ The material is easy to work with and produces really neat, crisp cuts. (ProTip : doing a quick laser test always helps) Alt text for the image

  3. Set the Cutting Parameters: Once the cardboard was loaded into the machine, we set the laser’s cutting parameters. These include things like the laser’s power, speed, and focus. Since cardboard cuts differently than wood or acrylic, we made sure to adjust the settings for a clean, precise cut. ⚙️📐 Alt text for the image Our Fab Lab instructor shared the the above image to understand how to operate the laser cutter with ease

  4. Run the Laser Cutter: Now for the exciting part! Watching the laser cutter in action was mesmerizing. It followed the design perfectly, cutting through the cardboard with pinpoint accuracy. The laser beam was like magic, creating detailed shapes and patterns layer by layer. 🌀⚡ Alt text for the image

  5. Remove and Assemble: After the machine finished cutting, I carefully removed the pieces from the bed. The parts were super precise, and all that was left was assembling them. It felt like putting together a 3D puzzle! 🧩🔨 Alt text for the image

These were the parameters used for laser cutting : Alt text for the image

Using the laser cutter was such a thrilling experience, especially with the help from the Fab Lab team. The precision and power of this tool are amazing, and you can create everything from intricate designs to functional pieces with ease! 🚀🔥

3D Printer 🖨️

The 3D printer is like having your own mini factory right on your desk! 🖨️✨ It turns digital designs into real, tangible objects by building them layer by layer—totally mesmerizing to watch! It’s perfect for creating prototypes, functional parts, or even cool decorative pieces. The possibilities are endless! 🌟

The team at Fab Lab also gave us an amazing walkthrough of the 3D printer, explaining everything from how to prepare files to how the machine works its magic. It made the whole process much smoother, and I felt ready to start printing! 💡🛠️

Here’s how I got started with the 3D printer:

  1. Prepare Your Design Just like with the laser cutter, I started by preparing my 3D design in a compatible format (like STL). The design was loaded into slicing software that converts the model into layers and sets parameters for the print. 🖥️📐 Alt text for the image

  2. Choose Your Material: For this print, I used PLA+, which is perfect for creating durable yet lightweight objects. Alt text for the image

  3. Set the Print Parameters: After loading the material into the 3D printer, I adjusted the print settings. This includes layer height, infill (how solid the object is), and print speed. The Fab Lab team helped me tweak everything to ensure the print would come out smoothly and efficiently. ⚙️💡 Alt text for the image Setting The height Alt text for the image Setting Parameters of Quality Alt text for the image Setting Parameters of Shell & Infill Alt text for the image Setting Build Plate & Exporting for Local

  4. Start Printing: Now for the fun part! Watching the 3D printer in action is absolutely fascinating. It slowly builds the object layer by layer, each one stacking on top of the last until your design comes to life. It’s almost like magic watching a digital file become something you can hold in your hands. 🧱✨ Alt text for the image

  5. Remove and Finishing Touches: Once the print was finished, I removed the object from the print bed. Sometimes, you need to do a bit of post-processing—like sanding or cleaning up edges—but the result was a smooth, finished piece. Ready to go! 🖼️🛠️ Alt text for the image

Using the 3D printer was such a cool experience, especially after the guidance from the Fab Lab team. Watching a digital design transform into something real, right in front of your eyes, is like a mix of art and science. 🖨️✨ Definitely a tool I’ll be using for a lot more projects!

Project Assembly 🛠️

After all the exploring and experimenting, I had everything I needed to showcase my Digital Body—all set up digitally, as you saw above. The only thing left? Assembling the actual pieces! 🧩 Easy, right? Well… not quite.

In my overconfidence, I thought it would be a breeze—just insert the pieces together, and voilà! But oh boy, was I so wrong. 😅

I sat down with my pieces, feeling like a DIY pro. I even went back to my trusty Slicer software where the layout was planned, and followed the little step-by-step assembly guide it had (seriously, bless the genius who added that feature! 🙏). All you have to do is click on the right left arrows at the bottom and see each shape get fit, the alphabet and numbers help identitfy the shape on your laser cut! 😅😅😅😅

Alt text for the image

At this point, I still had no idea that things were about to get real tricky.

So, I started confidently joining the pieces. All was going well… until the dreaded interlocking pieces came into play. 😬 That’s when my patience decided to leave the chat. The pieces would either refuse to slide in or, when they did, they’d bend or dent, turning my once-promising structure into a wobbly mess. It was like trying to solve a 3D puzzle while juggling! 🤹‍♀️

Alt text for the image

Stop motion of assembly

IT. WAS. SO. HARD! 😫 My goddess, human, and lion logo combo was fighting back! But I wasn't ready to give up. After what felt like hours of wrestling with cardboard and fighting the urge to just glue everything together, I finally had something that resembled my original concept. 🎉

Now, I won't lie—I'm not 100% proud of the aesthetics of the final outcome (it’s definitely more “abstract art” than “masterpiece”). But I am super proud of the fact that I powered through and incorporated all the skills and learnings this assignment demanded! 💪✨

Moral of the story? Assembly isn’t always as easy as it looks, but the struggle makes the victory that much sweeter! 😂

Concept Note 👑🦁

Alt text for the image High-res image of the final piece

This cardboard structure is more than just a cool 3D version of my logo—it's a symbol of what it means to wear your power, your strength, and your identity like a crown. 💫 Inspired by the idea that your body is your temple, this piece reflects the balance between fierce strength and delicate beauty that exists within every woman. And what's more fitting for a crown than a lion's mane, right? 🦁👸

Let’s dive into it! The head of the woman proudly wears parts of my Doodleist logo as a crown—featuring the lion, mermaids, moon, star, and sun—all elements that come together to showcase how a woman can be anything and everything.

The Lion’s Mane represents leadership, power, and resilience. In ancient times, alphas wore a lion’s mane as a victory symbol, showing their dominance and strength over their environment. Just like that, this woman wears her mane proudly, symbolizing her triumphs and challenges. It’s a sign that she is an alpha in her own right, strong and unstoppable! 🦁✨

The Mermaids are all about mystery, fascination, and a hint of magic. They bring out the softer, more enchanting side of femininity. Even when strong, a woman can still be captivating and graceful, luring people in with her charm. 🧜‍♀️🌊

The Moon and the Star represent nocturnal energy and mystery. Women, much like the phases of the moon, cycle through moments of full power and quiet reflection. 🌙✨ These symbols remind us of the intuition, calm, and guidance that comes with embracing our inner self—even in the darkest times.

The Sun is the fire sign 🔥 that burns inside every woman. It represents passion, creativity, and the drive to make things happen. With the sun sitting below the crown, it shows that beneath all the strength, beauty, and grace, there’s a fierce flame ready to ignite any challenge. 🌞

But here's where it gets super interesting—this structure ties back to the body. The body is a temple, and just like the crown on this figure, it reflects everything we stand for. The lion’s mane sits on her head, but it’s a symbol of victory and empowerment worn proudly by the body. From the top of her head to the soles of her feet, this goddess figure carries both the fierceness of a lion and the delicate beauty of a mermaid. 🦁🧜‍♀️

The crown isn’t just an accessory—it’s a statement. It shows how women embody strength and beauty, victory and grace, all at once. And much like the alphas of ancient times who wore the lion’s mane as a symbol of their triumph over the wild, this figure wears her crown of symbols to showcase her own personal victories. She’s a protector, a warrior, a creator, and an inspiration. ✨💪

In the end, this structure reflects how women wear their strength like a crown every day—whether it’s in the form of lion’s mane, a moonlit night, or a blazing sun. 🌟 The pieces of this crown symbolize all the different sides of a woman’s identity, showing that she can be strong, soft, bold, and mysterious all at once. And when she wears her crown, the world better watch out, because she’s stepping into her full power! 👑🔥
