Hello, I'm İpek Kuşcu

I work at the intersection of biomaterials, fermentation, and digital fabrication.

This documentation presents my journey through Fabricademy, focusing on material experimentation, living systems, and the development of bio-based design approaches.

In week 13, I proposed my final project exploring kombucha SCOBY as a living biomaterial.

About me

Hi! I’m İpek.

My work brings together fermentation, bioplastics, and experimental material design. I am particularly interested in growing materials instead of manufacturing them, and in exploring how natural processes can become part of design practice.

Through my projects, I combine hands-on experimentation, traditional knowledge, and contemporary design tools.

My background

My background is rooted in fermentation, product development, and creative production.

I have been working with fermentation for several years, developing products, recipes, and systems based on natural processes. This experience led me to explore biomaterials, especially kombucha SCOBY, as a new material system.

Alongside this, I am interested in digital tools, storytelling, and educational content, connecting material research with wider audiences.

Previous work

My previous work includes:

  • Fermentation-based product development
  • Kombucha and SCOBY experiments
  • Natural ingredient systems
  • Educational and digital content production

More recently, I have focused on transforming fermentation knowledge into biomaterial design and applications.

Current focus

  • SCOBY as biomaterial → textile & skin-contact applications
  • Bioplastics & natural materials
  • Digital fabrication & material exploration
  • Education & storytelling through making
