The Shape

This week I learned about modular design and tesselation. The start was hectic. We looked at many different examples from alumni, but I really wanted to choose a shape which meant more to me and is not just a geometric. After exploring various shapes, I saw how Adinkra symbol Nyame Dua could be turned into a connecting shape, where the cross-like shapes would stick out and be used to connect the shapes in various ways. This is where I also got more and more interested in thinking about the negative sides of the cut and tried to add lines to make cuts on them so they could be used in some way for other works.

Inspiration

My source of inspiration came from this Adinkra symbol list.

Working Process

First I tried designing on inkscape, but that was not a good idea, so I went directly to Rhino and started playing with the shapes, starting with circles to create the heart shapes.

The two variations of the shape I made on piñatex can also be connected together, the smaller one on top of the bigger one.

Final piece

The final outcome was a headdress which can be easily customised to become a different piece of accesory, such as a belt or a necklace.
