Research

the documentation is missing explanations of the pictures, the goal of the week, the outcome so it is not clear what u have exactly achieved. try to put the documentation in an order, like the checklist in the handbook. a. references inspirations b. materials c. what did you learn (notes from class) d what did you do e. processes(digital embroidery)

Some of the first ideas I got without actually knowing if this is something that can actually be made:

  1. Stretchable materials so I would be able to integrate them into my performances.
  2. I wondered about heat, whether one could heat one's clothes or accesories without any dangers.
  3. Interactive storytelling: Using boro mending technique with conductive fiber to fix holes, make paths on maps.
  4. Nordic Lights version of Binary Surfaces

Digital

Digital Calm Gudrita * Creating the circuit:

To create this circuit I made space Working

  • Final piece is a round wool piece made of conductive

  • Velostat
  • Neoprene fabric
  • Green led light

Testing embroidery machine

We tested an embroudery machine by making a copper spiral on a piece of stretched silicone. test2

Notes

Programming on Arduino Codes: setup() - happens once loop() - runs forever or until you turn it off

Tips: Calculate the resistance of your circuit! - V = I*R

When measuring threads, cut the same amount of thread, for example 10-20cm. 1. Check continuity - if sound comes - 2. Check the Ohms

Tools for E-Textiles

Adafruit Diffused RGB dressable - metallic buttons - Battery connector - Conductive woven thread for knitting - stretchable - Adafruit Cable with silicon coating - Heat-shrink tube - can be heated with a lighter to create a more stable connection between connected parts. - Adafruit sewable white LEDs with integrated resistor - Photoresistor - reacts to light, has a variable resistance - Potenciometer - e.g. to create a range of resistance - Carl Grim thread - can be soldered, very conductive - Breadbord: for prototyping electronic circuits. - Copper sticker - from 3M, can be cut by hand or vinyl cutter - Velostat - very piezo (press) resistive fabric - Eeomics - expensive, with carbon and more fabric like, similar to - Madeira Silver resistive thread - can be used in embroidery sewing machine, can be used for heating and instead of a resistor.

Conductive - Thread - Yarn (good for making stretch sensors) - Inks - Tapes - Copper sheet

Other Tools: - plyers - snips - felting needles - needles - scissors (for regular fabric, conductive fibreā€¦) - laser cutter - vinyl cutter - embroidery machine - sewing machine - iron - voltage tester - welding machine - alligator clips - multimeter

Input - Digital - on/off - Analog - Sensors

Switch is a break in the circuit - Momentary - Soft push buttons where conductive fabric touches one another Example: use sponge with a hole - Toggle - Press, zip, slide, etz - Tilt - conductive bead, or other object which switched on when tilted - Resistance

  • Velostat
  • Eeontex (might not be available for sale)
  • Potentiometer
