My background

I am Paul Nichols. I graduated with a BSc in Biomedical Science and then gained a MSc in Brewing Science both from the University of Sheffield.

After a stint in the brewing industry, I changed career at the start of 2016. I started getting involved modelling and teaching the CAD program Rhino. This allowed me to quickly build up my skills in Rhino and also Grasshopper, introducing me to parametric design and modelling on hugely different scales. It has been amazing to see the solutions that designers and engineers have come up with using these programs.

I took FabAcademy at IAAC in Barcelona in 2017 and finished this off in Brighton 2019. I really enjoyed the way this course was taught, the network it fostered and the open ended nature of the assignments. After IAAC, I had a few industrial design jobs, directly using the skills I had learnt from FabAcademy. After I had completed my course in 2019, I managed to get my current role as a Digital Fabrication Technician at The University of East London which I have been in since 2019.

In my current role, I don't often have the time to explore creatively or intellectually, so I am looking forward to Fabricademy to build on my design and technical skills. I would like to curate an interactive experience, but also use my skills in Biomedical to investigate new materials and dyes using mycelium and bacteria.
