Hello, it's Yafa!¶
Who am I professionally?¶
I'm an Architist = Architect + Artist
As you can see, I like to manipulate words and play with language. Words often inspire me, and I usually start thinking through them before translating those thoughts into other forms, mostly visual ones.
Why Fabricademy?¶
The keyword here is Phygital = Physical + Digital
During my Bachelor's degree, I took a course called Fabrication Studio, where I made a project called Pavilionergy = Pavilion + Energy. That was when I became certain that fabrication was a field I wanted to continue building on.
A few years after graduation, I interned at CPF Makerspace, while also being a public art resident at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (JNGFA). During that residency, I created Void Identity, a project that later became part of the gallery's permanent collection.
During my internship, I watched Zahya and Shahd work on their final projects at Fabricademy. Seeing the way they approached the body as a territory for growing and developing designs made me connect the dots: as an architect, I had always been used to thinking about land in a similar way. At the same time, at JNGFA, I was surrounded by performance artists who were thinking of the body itself as a medium.
All of these experiences gradually accumulated and shaped the way I came to see Fabricademy: as a space where different parts of my practice and interests could meet, overlap, and evolve together.
My Portfolio¶
Joining different programs and workshops in Amman, Jordan has made me believe in my dreams more and more. It has also helped me find more people around me, people whose ideas and practices have continuously enriched my own experience (and hopefully, the other way around :p). These experiences have gradually helped me build my portfolio and, more importantly, understand my own practice through making and collaboration.
I'm currently participating in the Touch Experimental Weaving Residency as part of Amman Design Week, where I began exploring weaving, materials, scale, and the possibilities of working with the body and space through textiles.
