4. BioChromes

This week was about natural dyes, pigments and inks. We explored with many natural materials that could be used to give color to fabric.

Inspiration

In summer 2023, I was part of Fabric Academy bootcamp in Jordan. One of the trips we made were to a small women led business named "Safi Crafts" in an area close to dead sea. The women there dye all their fabric with natural dyes, such as indigo, madder, natural earth, ochre, pomegranate and many others before they create their handsewn designs and sell them. We got to experiment with some of the dyes there, like indigo. So this week was exciting as I was able to try new materials.

Getting Started

We started this week by studying the types of natural fabrics available. We learnt that they are divided into two categories: 1. Animal based fibers like wool 2. Plant based fibers like cotton

We then learnt about a big selection of materials used for natural dyeing. The options are limitless. He are some of the materials used:

about your images..delete the tip!!
  1. Remember to credit/reference all your images to their authors. Open source helps us create change faster together, but we all deserve recognition for what we make, design, think, develop.

  2. remember to resize and optimize all your images. You will run out of space and the more data, the more servers, the more cooling systems and energy wasted :) make a choice at every image :)

This image is optimised in size with resolution 72 and passed through tinypng for final optimisation. Remove tips when you don't need them anymore!
