7. Computational Couture

For the computational couture week, I studyied the Grasshopper tool from Rhino and tryed to make a parametric pattern. In the same week as this activity I went to an exhibition in São Paulo and got to know the work of Judith Lauand. Her work has a lot of geometric shapes that inspired me for my work with the patterns and printing in fabric.

Process and workflow

After going to the exhibition I started to sketch possibilities and experiment them on the Grasshopper. The Grasshopper is a software inside Rhinoceros (CAD) that allows you to make different geometries through draging and connecting components that have output and input. It's used to build generative algorithms.

In my project the idea was to do one model playing with the replication tools, attraction points and also the randomness. But working in Grasshopper take much more time then what I tought so I focused on one I could really make and print. The choosed geometry was the curves with dots, playing with attraction points and the size of the dots.

To print the pattern we used a SETHI3D printer and the software Ultimaker cura for doing the G-code (to make it possible for the printer to read the project). We used PLA as filament and an elastic mesh fabric.
