Artist's statement

Machteld Eveline Zee, a self-taught Dutch artist born in 1984, immerses herself in the creation of contemporary artworks, finding solace and fulfillment within her creative process. With each fabric manipulation, brushstroke and color choice, she manifests a unique and captivating visual language that speaks to the depths of human emotions and experiences.

The artist's skillful manipulation of shapes and anti-shapes within her artwork creates a dynamic interplay of energy and movement. Her compositions breathe life into the canvas, exuding a sense of vitality and liveliness. It is through these vibrant arrangements that Zee communicates her deep-rooted need for personal liberation and autonomy, resonating with viewers on a profound level.

Beyond the aesthetic allure, Zee's artistic endeavors also serve as a means of connecting with her audience. Her outstretched hand, figuratively represented in her artwork, reaches out to touch the hearts and minds of those who engage with her creations. She invites viewers to embrace the playfulness and joy that she herself craves, offering a shared experience that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

Yet, amidst the celebration of freedom and exuberance, Zee also delves into the depths of human struggle and vulnerability. Some of her works reveal a raw and unfiltered portrayal of a soul in distress, exposing the inherent complexities and contradictions of the human experience. In exploring this darker side, Zee confronts her own emotions and confronts the viewer with the raw essence of existence. It is through this poignant exploration that she achieves a profound connection with her own aliveness and the collective consciousness.
