Introduction

The development of a micro-factory production system at FabLab is a project I have pursued with deep commitment. In Kenya, the commercial potential of our natural resources remains largely untapped, even as the country continues to rely heavily on imported goods. My work focuses on sisal fibre, a biomaterial that is in abundance and known for its strength, durability and low elasticity compared to other natural fibres. the project aimed to investigate the potential of sisal fibre as a suitable material for product development particularly for seat fabric application. With the previously developed Fablabable kinetic seat, I was to replace the synthetic belts with sisal belts that would dmonstrate same functionality with more eco-friendly manufacturing practices.

In the long term, the micro-factory production system has the potential to unlock an entire value chain of sisal-based products beyond seat belts. This approach will help in driving for job creation, skill development, community empowerment, income generation, and a significant reduction in reliance on imported goods—demonstrating how local resources can fuel innovative, circular, and resilient manufacturing.
