This is where I will update my progress on the Fabricademy course.

about me

Hello, I am erien. I like researching and making things. I like plants, analogue film & photography and wool. I am also a mother and an artist.

my background & previous work

I work across visual art, film, textile and photography, with a focus on social and ecological themes. The last six years I have been researching plants as forms of resistance. I studied photography, then cultural studies. My work has been leaning towards textile in the last few years, where I have been mainly working with wool. To see previous works I have made you can find my website. I am also a Linnen Stewart this year. More info on the project.

I also work together with another artist photographer Renée Lorie. Together we do social artistic projects. This is mainly photography, but textile is also entering our projects lately. You can see some of our shared work

The textiles are coloured with the respective plants you can 'play with'.
The actions are embroidered into the felted works.

Stills 'Lovegarden', Erien Withouck, 2023.

This is a 16mm film where I reflected on plants related to love and I developed the film with thyme and Saint John's Wort, plants which are historically related to themes of love.

For the latest installation I felted seeds of plants related to time into different 'carpets' which grew into a garden. The flags illustrated the process of a poppy opening. All textiles are coloured with plants such as Weld, Indigo and Madder.

with Renée Lorie

This is a project I did with Renée Lorie last year. We worked six months together with solo mothers in the social housing complex Cité Modelewijk in Laken. They asked us to guide them in an artistic expression of their struggles as solo mothers. The result was a large textile which integrated photographs they took of their daily routines, portraits taken by us and embroidered quotes from conversations on their life stories.

Because some mothers preferred to remain anonymous, we found a way of creating masks with wool. It was also an interesting take on how the struggles of single mothers are often invisible.
