11. Implications and applications

This week I worked on defining my final project idea.

At the beginning of the week I was an idea more or less clear, that I was in my mind since few months. This idea was to create a virtual fashion project (between real and unreal dimension, where I will create 3D pieces to intagrate in reality thanks to the augmented reality). I wanted to continue my master degree project. Focus on this idea, I forgot to question myself and what I really wanted to do thanks to that I learned this last months.

After the co-creation session of friday, I was very confused in my mind and not very shure of my idea project. I questioned mysel and this first idea project. After to having exorcised this idea, I decided to start at the beginning and to question myself step by step. It was very frustrating but I think it was necessarely.

First :

I would like to combine circular fashion, e-textile, computational couture and textile as scaffold weeks.

Then I questioned mysel :
- What is my story ? - What I want to tell ? - What I want to do ? - Where I want to go ? - Why it is important for me ?

Update Slide presention Version 2

What : I want to create a 3D interactive modular construction inspired of the biological environment, for a space (public space, event space, etc).

Why : As a textile designer specialized in surface materials and visual art, I want to explore new materialities, tactilities, and question the life of materials thanks to the new technologies and digital tools. I chose to inspire me of biological environment, because I think we can find many technical solutions in this environment. In addition I want to create a sustainability surface, a “smart material”, that can be reused, re-configured into different new arrangements and adapted in different contexts. I practice the design fiction in my work because I like create narrations and stories in my creation. So, I want to tell a story, create a narration around this material to bring the people awareness. For that I would like to create an interactive system on this construction.

The message / the narration : I don't know exactly for now but I want to bring the people awareness of the environment, by an interactive experience. I thing the message will be in link with my last project concept, the consumption system.

How and When : First I will do research on the micro organism and biological envrironment, to inspire me and then I will experiment different surfaces and shapes on Rhino and Grasshopper.

After being satisfied on my 3D surface research, I will research how to create a module of my 3D surface and how to produce this module. Maybe thanks to a 3D negative mold printed of my module to mold it to infinity. With this technique, I could to create my own composite with fiber uplycled and concrete as I made that during the textile as scaffold week. Then, I will experiment these modules in real space and I will research different shape constructions for different places.

Finally, I would like to create an interactivity on my modular construction with lights and sensors.

Where : I want to focus on the showcase. During my master degrees I developed Awarness Shocases project. This project criticizes the fashion system and it questions a new dimension of the fashion showcases. So, I want to use my expertise of this space and this subject to propose a new dimension of the showcase by contextualising my project in this place.

Next step :

  • Define a clear schedle, step by step.
  • Define the volcabulary that I reasearch on my new material (soft, flexibility, thin, tiny, big,)

KEY WORD : Modularity - Reusing - Re-organising - Sustainable surface - Parametric design

Foraeva Project

KEY WORD : Parametric design - past / futur - tradition / new age - innovation

Laurine Galliot

"Think the color as a revelation of the shape, of the object. There, the color is not use as a pattern but a way to reaval the act, the movement. Laureline Gailliot is lost between 2D and 3D, and play with that."

KEY WORD : 3D printing - painting - 2D / 3D

"The relationship with science is at the heart of what we do because we are very hungry researchers,"

"We've developed illuminated, self-supporting animated architectural textiles using an old textile technique, lace making, that's brought up to an architectural scale then combined with parametric design software to create some very ephemeral light installations."

KEY WORD : Biomimicry - Old technique - New technologie - Parametric design - Science - Social

Studio PMS

Studio PMS question and research new materialities and tactilities by the 3D moddeling. Their work open my mind to other way and other possibilites to create materials.

Storytelling

by Teresa Van Twuijver

"A story can help you to promote your project or idea."

Fabricademy 19-20 - Recitations - Storytelling with Teresa van Twuijver from Fabricademy, Textile Academy on Vimeo.

What is my story ? What I want to tell ? What I want to do ? Where I want to go ? Why it is important for me ?

A story is the defining part of anything. It makes a thing what it is. Without a story any project is soon forgotten. In fact : the story part of a project is what people will remember first and foremost.

Important note : Contextualisation

Every project and story has a story : it just needs to be excavated, carefully arranged and nicely presented. The story is already there. You only need to find it and then to design a way of showcasing it.

Storytelling is different of documentation : it is What and Why - words, images and emotions

Storytelling is the vitrine in whitch you showcase your project. You need to construct and design it cafefully.

Storytelling processus : Describing a problem Introducing a hero (project or design) The hero finding a solution for the problem Arranging all off the above in a persuasive and/or attractive way.

The storytelling allows to tell why it is important to find a solution or an answer to the problem.

Form of storytelling : Is concise > it is short : makes choices, set boundaries for yourself

What is my boundaries ? (for these 3 months ?)

Choose a point of view (POV) > POV of your audience / visitors / buyers.. : things that are obvious for you are unknown to them. So approach your story from the audience's perspective.

The 3 second rule : being your story with a 'bang' – the most surprisign element of it make sure your 'bang' can be understood within 3sec

A good beginning : a great headline / a great picture / a great intro (max 3 short sentences)

To find my story : Why you want to do a certain final project ? Why you are at the fabricademy in the first place ? Why do you like new technoligies ? Or why you are here, at fabricademy ?... What ? Why + emotions of your engagement with your project ?

In order : Main idea : > because Because > Because > Because >Because Therefore > Therefore ... Main story : ...

Don't : - Don't use "buzz words" because it is my own story, i have to be the only person to can tell this story. Be carefull the buzz word bingo. - Don't try to be 'complete'.

Do's : - Be as personal as possible, be as organized as possible.
