Get to know me

A picture of Marleen

Hi, I'm Marleen! Nice to meet you and welcome to my site. Here I document my Fabricademy journey. All my struggles, thoughts and hopefully some nice final products.

About Me

I'm on my journey to find out more about myself, I cannot say yet in what box of profession I fit and am not even sure if I want to.

Either way, in 2025 I finished my bachelor degree in Envrionmental Sciences at the HAS green academy in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. During those 4 years I learned a lot about reducing and thinking outside of the box. Aside from that, I love to work with my hands and be surprised with how much is possible if you don't give up. I learned myself how to crochet and knit with fabrics and yarn we had at home and it became a big, but I mean BIG hobby of mine.

Motivation

After a year of figuring my way in Lyon I stumbeld upon Woolshed what leaded me to the Fabricademy program. As soon as I read through the pages I knew it was something for me. Combining my drive for sustainability with my hobbies of creating. I would love to explore the field of recycling and see what waste can become what new product. Seeing if I can improve processes like this to reduce water use, air polution and waste production.

Previous Work

In 2024, I started to learn how to crochet and created my first top. My main motivation to learn crochet was to replace my phone use, so after finishing the top, I immediately started a new big project. I learned how to knit and cast on several projects on the needles. Since then, I never had no project to work on, and that’s a good feeling!

Timeline of previous work

Before the summer, I started trying out Blender with the idea to make my imagination world in my head come to life. With the help of lots of tutorials, I made for Confiture Maison their logo in 3D. After that, we had lots of ideas about what to do with it, and I made a tiny animation to try out some stuff. Maybe we will extend this project further in the future.

Inspiration and Interest

I made this moodboard to show the things I like and am interested in. There are some knits, paintings, and a dying project. Because of my big hobby, knitting, I want to explore it further and take it to another level. The main inspiration I have consists of two words: transparency and layers.

Moodboard main inspiration

I feel transparency gives more depth to a textile, material, or project. The see-throughness and the ability to create all visible layers. For me, it’s an interesting feature to play with and explore the possibilities. In my view, transparency has another meaning as well. It involves an open process and sharing the knowledge used. Making it so that others can easily reproduce it and learn from the process.
In other ways, layers can create more depth as well. It can make the transparency more opaque and make it change color. So have all projects multiple layers: a layer of ideas, research, mistakes, fixes, final work, and wanting more.
Not all these layers are visible when looking at a project, it takes transparency to show them to you. The way I see it, transparency and layers are both necessary to make a project dynamic and profound.
