About Me¶
I’m Myles Lack-Zell, an engineering-trained interdisciplinary designer with a passion for integrating intentional design and innovative engineering to create delightful, elegant, experiences that positively impact people’s day-to-day lives.
I have always straddled the worlds of art/design and engineering/technology, often bouncing between the two until finding a project or experience that combines my interests. In the process, I've accumulated knowledge across disciplines that I can apply to different types of projects. While trying to decide on a specialty, I realized that the throughline of my work is an experience-first approach, the result of which can take many forms, from physical products and spaces to digital experiences and individualized services.
Selected Works¶
Sculpting Light¶
'Sculpting Light'is a collection of sculptural hand-blown glass and carved cork forms that act as tools to ‘sculpt’ light, transporting viewers to an ethereal world. These small pieces bring an installation art experience into the home, creating space to slow down from everyday life and have a moment just sitting in awe. Rather starting with a full plan of what I would be making, my designs grew out of material explorations where I played with techniques for shaping glass and tested how they affected different light sources. Contour Lantern¶
May be added here in the future. For now, see full portfolio entry for details.
Biomaterial Explorations¶
I've incorporated biomaterials into a few projects in the past and look forward to diving deeper into more advanced recipes and their applications. As part of The Mycelium Furniture Project, I grew the base for a coffee table out of mycelium-impregnated hemp husk. The glowing green sphere in 'Drop' is made of a gelatin-based bioplastic that I poured over foiled-coated hemisphere bucks.
