1. State of the Art, Project Management and Documentation

Being new to coding, a little overwhelmed by all the new imprerssions, and from the last century, caused me to run a little behind during the first week. But making mistakes does help one learn and even master some things in due time. Below I write about what I discovered, where I encountered problems, how I worked out a way around some issues and how others remain to be sorted out. I aim to help out future Fabricademy students that may be like me and a little less digitally savvy than some.

Documentation

I haven't worked with coding much and I now realise it does take some time to get the hang of it. At the start I even had trouble finding the right place to edit, but as I worked more, this became easier. I quickly got the hang of altering my landing page. And found it reassuring that I could simply type in the logo and colour I had found and liked.

Files, Folders and Documents. The State of my Art

During the weekend, I decided to look for my art-work from the last century. It should be somewhere in our storage room, behind, well, a lot of stuff. It was, however, great to encouter the things I made once again. I set up a simple setting to photograph and was able to share the works on my landing page. It truly felt as if I had brought these works to the 21st century. Such an accomplishment.
I also relaised the documentation of my art-works was in files, folders and documents, but in a very different manner than we now mainly relate to those. Things that were only there physically now often only exist digitally. Had I been in art school now, I think many projects would originate in the computer, or at least need one to come about, let alone sent out there.

Creating the index.md page

Basic problems from hours spent on centering an image to confusion between locations. Cecilia reassured us that we'd be used to all of this by week 4, and in hindsight I must say she was absolutely right. Yet the despair of thew first few attempts isn't forgotten

Navigation: Finding the Right Starting Screen for Markdown
It took me quite a while to get used to the steps I needed to take to get to where I was to post my texts and images. Being completely unfamiliar with coding, even the diffference in 'layers' between the codes (for images for example) for assignments and the index.md was confusing. I had no idea where I was, how I got there and how to get there again. So, here's help :)
The image above shows you where to edit your landing page. This was confusing for me at first. Once there, changing the name, colours, font and logo was quite intuitive and worked out okay.
Placing images on the landing page
I spent hours trying to center an image on the landing page, it was quite frustrating. Later on I found a solution in doing what I felt comfortable with already (see below).

Placing images on the assignments page

Don't commit without reading and thinking. Committing always needs to be done to the master branch.
Before uploading, don't forget to tinyfy your images!

Embedding a webpage
I, accidentally, worked out how you can embed a website through which you may then scroll. See the example on the week 05 assignments page.

Notes to Self
Starting Fabricademy proved somewhat overwhelming for me. I didn't understand how to go about it straight away and was mainly taking notes in my little notebook. Luckily they're still there, as are those still quite fresh in my mind and some try-outs and screen shots I have trashed but not yet emptied. This 'Note to Self' is here to remind me to keep the documentation up-to-date as I go. I am now familiar enough with Markdown to at least put the basics here, which I can than lay out and make look nice at a later stage.

Another note is about the links on the class page that I will need to work faster. This will save me from watching complete tutorials to find out the codes and tricks I need. Each week has additional information and the slides. My week 01 information, I will find here. A note to self to take to the next weeks also.
