2. Digital bodies

Yves KLEIN

This week we talk about THE BODY, a topic that interest me particularly.

A Tibetan proverb says someting like that :

" If you listen to your body whispering, you won't hear him shouting"

Pay attention to your body, take care of him, accept it and learn to love him.

Let me share some of the artistic beauties that deeply touch me about this particular topic of Body In Art

Assignement of the week

...First focusing on HANDS

We are going to experiment the 3D Scanning, first time ever for me, so I'm really excited about it !!

As I began to think about which part of the body I would like to focus on, I instantly told me that hands, as a strong symbol of creation, would be the perfect one. Put them in light was as well a way to be thankfull for all the pleasure that they offer me !!

Thanks to my hands, I can : create, receive, offer, communicate, talk, pray, heal, say hello, touch etc...

Experimentations

I took the bus on thursday morning to go to Oullins, where all the Textile Lab Group gathered to work on the 3D tools and softwares.

Look at my new office 😃:

I really enjoyed the time spent altogether, we learn a lot from one another and share our difficulties or victories !!

Lunch Time in the beautiful garden 🌞

3D Scanning

First, we learnt to manipulate a kinect to scan a body. It was really fun to be scanned and to scan the other girls.

Make Human

During this expermentation, I realised that some parts of the body were difficult to scan, such as the hands, since they are quite little and complex.

That's why I took the decision to work on Make Human to define my 3D Body, and to give up my first idea to work on the hand.

I really enjoyed Working on this software, discovering all the possibilies to personnalize your character.

Some examples of what you can do:

So, may I introduce you my first creation on Make Human : "SUPER-HUMAN".

Super-Human has the particularity to combine the attributes of both women and men, without being gendered.

It symbolizes a wish that maybe, one day, we'll definitely end up with this old patriarchal society, and accept that we have complementary strength to unify.

Rhino 3D

Learn to work with Rhino has really been quite hard for me. It was hard to understand what I needed to do, and to know how to manipulate my 3D Object. I had to listen several times to the Anastasia's tutorial to follow each step, not to be completely lost !!

So here are the functions I used to make my 3D Human ready for Slicer :

  • Gumball, orth fonction

Distance, Scale and use a tool box

So, what I did first was to check the scale of my human, and ajust it in fonction of the laser cut dimensions.

To do that, I made a tool box representing the laser cut machine measures, and adapt the dimension of my piece so that it is not too big to be cut.

MeshTrim/ Cut, Polyline

Then I had to cut the body, so that I had only the bust remaining.

To do that, I used the MeshTrim fonction. First, you have to define a cuting tool, which for me was the Popyline -segment-, put it where you have to cut the piece, and then select the part to cut.

So, my avatar is now ready - at least, I hope so !!- to be sent in Slicer...

Slicer Fusion

This software allows you to prepare your Rhino files for the laser cut.

You have different construction possibilities, and you can test and see how many pieces and sleaves it makes.

First, you have to fulfill the right settings, corresponding to the material you're going to use : dimension of the laser cut and the thickness of the cardboard...

The different construction technics

On this picture, you can see on the right that you obtain 5 sheets, and an amount of 244 pieces to assemble.

Laser cutting

On friday morning, we all gathered in the Tactile Lab, in Lyon, to cut our pieces with a Trotec Machine.

Once your work is done in Slicer, you can export them in pdf. Then, you have to check the properties of the laser cut, and adapt the color of your Slicer files, so that the laser will be able to recognize the lines.

You can change the colors in Illustrator or in Inkscape.

In our case, Engraving lines in green, and cuting lines in red.

Then everything's ok to print your files with the Trotec

My first video 😃🥳

... So far, everything was almost going well, except the fact that I didn't manage to find sleep the previous night, and that my brain didn't work normally....It was a real mess in my head 🤯🤯🤯.

But I did manage to have my puzzle pieces ready before going back home, and that was the most important for me. Very tired but so pleased I've been able to finish this part of the job in time !!!

On sunday, after a good night sleeping well, I was so impatient to build my puzzle !!!

I began to range my pieces by size...

I looked at the Assembly steps for a little help, but quite quickly, I knew there was a BIG PROBLEM : I made a mistake when I saved my files in Illustrator, and printed 5 times the same file

I was obviously so disapointed, and a bit angry with myself as well...

But Diane reassured me, and told me I could be able to re print them later...

In the meantime, on of my super colleague, Super-Louise proposed me to print my files, as she went to the Tactile Lab to print her own work. This spontaneous proposition of help really touched me. That made me realise that the months to come would certainly be gorgeous and full of magical moments like this one ✨✨✨.

Finally, it took me a few hours to finish my Super-Human, and I can say it was a real pleasure for me to give birth to the first creation of my Fabricademy !!!

Here it is, alive (or almost ^^):
