3. Circular fashion

This week we talk about Circular Fashion, and to explore this topic, we were lucky to discover the work of Elisabeth JAYOT.

Based on the "Open Structure" project, she developped a seamless clothing project, made of several pieces that are assembled thanks to an attachment system.

For this week assignement, we have to create a textile - seamless- puzzled- garment or accessory.

Research

I found some inspiration on Pinterest about that kind of technic :

And about the shape of the module :

I had a real preference for round ones : it makes me think of the infinite mouvement of waves, which has a so calming effect on me...

For this project, the choice of the fabric is quite strongly restrictive : We can only use synthtetic fabrics like Scuba, wool, liège, feutrine...that can be cut by the laser machine, otherwise it would burn.

REMEMBER : To be sure it won't be dangerous as burning by the laser cut, you have to check with a lighter. If the flame is green, and the smell is not good, change it !

As the fabrics are quite warm, and that these days are particulary cold, I felt I would appreciate someting that warms you quickly like a chale, a cape, or something in wich you can "roll" yourself.

...or something to cover the head, like a hat or a hoodie

First ideas about the choice of the module : I came to the idea of a "Coquille Saint-Jacques", which represents a sheltering form.

How does it work with the paper ?

The pieces are linked by:

  • 3 braquets : two little ones on each side, and one made by the base of the shell.
  • 3 openings : 2 little vertical ones and one larger at the bottom

Rhino again

Next step is to be able to draw the module in Rhino. This was the real difficult part for me, since I'm a very little baby in this software, not even able to walk by myself ...

Like last week, I worked with Anastasia for hours, replayed the tutorials again and again, struggling to understand how to have my module at the right dimensions...and stay very calm about it !!

I began to make the global form, without the attachment pieces:

  • the base : polyline / segment / ortho activated
  • the round form using the curve fonction
  • made a rectangle to scale my form with the right dimensions : 90*80mm
  • draw the attachments and stick them to the shell
  • Use the fillet and trim fonctions to have linear curves
  • then Mirror it to have a symetric form
  • Join the whole drawing
  • Make 2D
  • Made a Bounding box
  • And finally, the Array fonction, to duplicate the module to the dimension of the laser cut pattern

This last step didn't work for me, and I have to be honest about it, and tell the truth : I didn't manage to have my file ready on time !!

Laser Cut

Globally, this first test lead me to these conclusion:

  • the different peaces fit well into one another : Great !!
  • I have to rescale my pieces : I don't know why but they were really smaller than expected (?)
  • The openings are a bit too big : I didn't realize that the paper was far less flexible than the fabric

After a few modifications, here is my file ready to be printed by the BIG TROTEC

Friday afternoon, we went to the Trotec Showroom in Venissieux, near Lyon, to print our pieces.

I'm still working on it, trying to find the best way to wear it, but I'm quite happy with the result !!

Maybe I'll find another way to put the modules together, or make completely another object. That's what make this exercise as funny as playing with Lego !

If I could improve it, I would try to make it less fragile by reducing the size of the modules and of the large opening...

And one of my main regret is that is not totally zero waste, but I'll try to do something of it !!
