Implications and applications---"Garment of object"

Research ideation & Concept

Reference

This artistic idea is delves into the realm of anthropomorphism, giving life to the inanimate.

By personifying objects through dress it up with “garment”,this project aim to create the scenario of the garment of objects as a canvas for artistic expression, blurs the boundaries between inanimate and animate, transforming objects into living substance, bring a unique and whimsical narrative where objects become characters with their own stories to tell.

“Garment of object” extends this association to include objects, exploring creative and imaginative possibilities beyond human wear.

These works, presented in different materials, all share the commonality of giving objects (chairs) a new layer, almost like garment. It can even be described as a form of attire. These lifeless objects, through this process, seem to come to life.

I believe there is a close interconnection among object sustainability, the Anthropocene concept, and overproduction. Objects, produced by humans, lack a voice and can only come to life or cease to exist entirely according to human intentions. This, for me, serves as an intriguing starting point: What if instead of making objects for us, we consider what we can do for objects? I believe books related to Object-Oriented Ontology, the Anthropocene, and object sustainability could offer interesting perspectives on these matters.

Message to audience and plan

Message to audience

Certainly, as the title, this project is created for my friends, the "objects." However, through this project, I aim to convey an additional message to the audience includes art enthusiasts, individuals interested in exploring the intersection of art and object design. Garment of an Object aims to appeal to those who appreciate the unconventional, the artistic, and the narratives embedded in everyday life.

The expected result may take the form of an exhibition: several objects exhibited in one living scenario. However, I also hope that through document the development process of the project(video, text, image...etc), these objects won't only come alive within the exhibition; perhaps they can make an impact on a broader audience through imagery and publications.

Project plan

Phase I Finalize idea - Publication, book, references digest - Highlight the interesting phrase, paragragh - Potential materials research

Phase II Hands on try out

  • Discover the object which would be final pieces(anaylse the features)
  • Prototype with chosen material, object

Phase III Define the final scenario, presenting method, media

  • Through prototype, define the final outcome for each objects
  • Scenario set up, think about how to use these object to “speak something”

Phase IV Documentation summary

  • Manage the documentation(Research, process, final outcome)

Project pitch feedback

Oscar What about if these garments are living things? How it relates to wear and tear, decay. What about bioremediation, regeneration, ....
Cecilia I like your questions - it feels like a double reflection - between how we relate to garments, and how an object would relate to it. does it explore the realm of relations - and voicing a silent bystander? we "wear" for a large amount of reasons- maybe mapping those or priorotize them- can be a starting point- ask people around you how do they relate. but this again - will depart from the human perspective - do you want that? I also wonder if time is a criteria in your research?
Claudia your proposal reminds me of this project https://www.dezeen.com/2011/04/11/botanica-by-formafantasma/
Rico "animate garments"...garment with a voice of its own...fascinating! We ABSOLUTELY produce and consume too much...way beyond need...and very much about greed. "garment object relationship" and "garment for object" are both very interesting ideas...but I don't know how it relates to your other great idea of giving garments a voice. Maybe there is no relationship...but it would be great if you can find a solid conceptual bridge to link the 2 ideas convincingly.
Diane Very curious about your project, and how you're going to think about form and functionality for the garments. Do you know wich kind of objects you'd like to use in terms of materials and function ? Like, basic objects out of natural materials (wooden chair or table), or technological objects (an abandoned computer, a machine), or both ? I think technological objects are those we as humans tend to personify the most, by talking to them, for example...
Marion Maybe you can associate human garments to objects garments?
Hala Love the personification of garments, Jimmy! I think you will need to define the type of tools these 'garments' are inspired by, what type of fabrication techniques will you be interested in trying out. If you're looking at it as the clothes we wear, would these garments be functional or just coverings/aesthetics/etc?
Stephanie J. Love this idea! There is a famous "hungry tree" in Ireland eating a bench https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungry_Tree
Riley I find this idea very interesting, thinking about how we personify objects in order to empathize with them. You might like the book "vibrant matter a political ecology of things by Jane Bennet or other writers talking about Object Oriented Ontology. Curious what kind of materials you will be using and if the garments will also take on a life of themselves
Mina I'm looking forward to your project. I like your idea of dressing inanimate objects, that matter wants to be expressive, decorated. It's imaginative and playful. Hannah Levy's work sees chairs as sculptures, and the latex looks a lot like a skin for the metal legs of the chair. https://www.studiomakkinkbey.nl/list/projects/3031_kokon_paneling/1793 this is another work that uses already existing chairs to create something entirely different with again grappling with the theme of layering a layer of "skin" to inanimate objects
