2. Digital bodies

WEEK 2:

This week is about creating a physical body from a digital image of a human body. Build it using the laser cutting machine and a material as simple as cardboard. It is a good option to create mannequins for our works using this technology.

Research online

There are many examples and possibilities of this technique.

My project for this week

In my case I didn't use a scanner but from a basic body in the program MakeHuman I put the characteristics I wanted and exported it as a .slt and .obj document.

Then I opened the document in Rhino and with the TrimMesh command, I cut the legs, hands and head to simplify the process. Then with the CAP command I closed the holes of the cuts. And I gave the image a total size of 20 cm high. Then I exported it again as a .stl and .obj document.

Finally I imported the .stl document into SLICER for fusion 360. After setting a format, I selected the option of interlocked slices with spaces in between. I looked for the simplest angle where I could understand the torso figure, and I had to eliminate the arms. After checking that there were no thin parts I exported the document as a pdf.

Test 1

Test 2

Finally I made the slices again, so that it would be simpler, and one of the arms would remain. The width of the cardboard was 2.5 mm. The figure is 22 cm high.

Learning the procedure of using laser technology has been a dream come true for me!
