SEAWEED DIALOGUES |  CONCEPT

A material-driven exploration of Icelandic brown kelp as a biomaterial. Researching how locally foraged seaweed can be turned into translucent, flexible parchment-like material, utilising the naturally occurring polymers within the seaweed itself to adjust the specific qualities. Furthermore, the research explores how the material can be cast into self-supporting vessels. The objective of this ongoing research is to initiate a sensorial dialogue between seaweed vessels and human, posing the question of what seaweed is and can be. Proposing alternative uses and material prospects of the local brown kelp, putting the focus on its material value and possibilities.
