What Is It That I'm Making

I want to make a tapestry from fabric waste donated by people all over Jordan and built with their help showing different possibilities and ways of upcycling. to raise peoples awareness to the issue of fabric waste and lead them towards circular economy, make them more aware of the possibilities they have around them and enhance their responsibility towards their community and the environment.

we will calculate the wight of fabric used in each workshop to know the space we saved in landfills and our impact on nature, the workshop will focus on raising awareness to the importance of fabric recycling, an introduction to design thinking and some alternative Techniques to reuse fabric waste to impower community members and let them know that each one of us can actually make a change.

Why am I Making This Project

According to the BBC FUTURE The average American has been estimated to throw away around 37kg of clothes every year. And globally, an estimated 92 million tones of textiles waste is created each year and the equivalent to a rubbish truck full of clothes ends up on landfill sites every second fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tones of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year and 20% of global waste water Globally just 12% of the material used for clothing ends up being recycled According to the World Resources Institute, it takes 2,700 liters of water to make one cotton shirt Textiles can take up to 200+ years to decompose in landfills

In Jordan according to GAM. it is estimated an average of 6,000 tones of solid waste per day, approximately 8% of the total waste is textiles and napkins The Ghabawi landfill is one of the largest in Jordan and the lifetime span for the Ghabawi landfill is 17 years more, until 2035 so we are counting on recycling and reusing of our waste, not only fabric but everything

These numbers makes us think twice about our actions towards the environment and makes us try our best to change the peoples behaviors and make them more aware of what's happening around the world and that is why I'm making this project not just to have an outcome (the tapestry) but what is more important is to reach people see what they know and how they think and try to enhance their awareness and responsibilities

Where Is It Taking Place

This project will take place in 3 different governors in Jordan, Amman, Al-Balqa, Jerash, making a two days workshop to raise awareness to the importance of reusing our waste and the impact of individuals on nature, and to teach them some eco-friendly ways to deal with their fabrics, such as: upcycling, natural dying, and circular fashion.

People will be asked to bring some unwanted fabrics to make a tapestry, we will make 3 different tapestries in three different techniques regarding to the capabilities of the area the workshop will take place in, at the end the tapestries will be show cased to thank everyone who participated in the making and to be an Inspiration to others to replicate the idea of upcycling fabric waste into an art piece
