Abstract

This project is a Material Driven Study on Seaweed-based materials using Bio-Strategies: Biophila, Biomimicry and Biotechnology. The plastic pollution problems and textile waste concerns led this project to use Alginate from the brown algae regarding invasive alien species (invasive macroalgae) ensuring sustainable exploitation of resources for food reusable packaging. For this work, Alginate Biofilms and Bio-Plastic sheets were achieved, as well as the manual extrusion with a syringe (Bio-Yarn) for threads of bio-coated fibres with Alginate. It was also developed an open-source plywood Laser 3D loom to create a Spider Web biosystem-inspired bag for groceries. Results demonstrate that using Design using Bio-Strategies are relevant to Circular Economy and help to achieve products that are biodegradable.
