11. Implications & Applications

personal journey

Before I came to Fabricademy I was researching the future of fashion, building my portfolio, navigating and tending to my physical my mental wellbeing challenges whilst working through the pandemic's lockdown.

I had become really intrigued in the possibility of using clothing to helps others and especially towards mental health if possible. This article about the scientific benefits of hugs backed up my interest in exploring ways to generate more calm for people. This led me to this article and explore specialised garments as mentioned such as the deep pressure Vayu Vest for people suffering from mental health concerns.

My friend told me about the weighted blankets her partner had which I'd never heard of before. I got quite excited about the possibility of using this technology in clothing. Researching weighted blankets more, I learnt that they were created by a certified occupational therapist Nancy VandenBerg. The blankets provide deep pressure to the upper back and shoulders of the wearer, a gentle intervention and calming strategy. They work with patented steel plates designed to lay directly on the muscle fibers of the body. Applying deep pressure therapy and proprioceptive input (the sense of self movement aka the "sixth sense"):

  • increases calm
  • decreases anxiety, stress, agitation, aggression
  • treats symptoms of PTSD, Alzheimers & Neurocognitive disorders
  • effective treatment for Autism, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, Tourettes & OCD
  • promotes self awareness
  • increases energy levels and quality of sleep

With so many benefits, this was definitely something I wanted to explore more.

I came across Vollebak when I was applying for the jobs in the pandemic and was immediately drawn to their approach to designing as a response to briefs and narratives. After listening to this podcast I with enticed by their progressive direction: and to think about clothing as an aid you could wear all the time if you needed to: clothing as our doctor.

Thinking about compression clothing led me to sportswear such as Under Armour's Recover range with bioceramic material. This too led me to reading more about bioceramic textiles: the mechanism of reflecting the energy we generate back to our muscles to create a relaxing feeling.

introduction

My final project proposal is to create a clothing concept using body mapping techniques via computational design and implements healing biomaterials or concepts. I aim for an outcome with sensual relief for the wearer. As a bare minimum my goal is to raise awareness about the important of our body experience
