Flesh, Fibers & Form - A Textile Tribute to the Body

I plan to make a series of wearable pieces / garments Inspired by the Human Body + Anatomy Incorporate an interactive element Combine traditional techniques with modern advances & technology The concept is to reveal (some) the layers of the body and visually demonstrate the anatomical structure. I aim to show the movement, change, exaggeration, bring this to life and illuminate the layers underneath (in some cases literally)... Keep in mind 3 key words = Wow! Elegant & Playful (stick with signature + style)

Where has this concept come from? For many years, the human body has been integral to my work. My fascination with it has subsequently grown more and more. I have become quite obsessed with Anatomy, due to my love for life drawing. With this, I wish to observe & display the internal parts of the body on the exterior in pieces that can be worn. Where will it be? I hope to have these pieces relatively adaptable to various environments and contexts, so that they can ‘live a life’ that is more than a one time wonder. I see these pieces having an interactive element, and not necessarily worn for the everyday, but coming to life displayed on a stage or a screen. They can either be viewed in the flesh in a live performance, or captured in a photograph or film. I also aim to make the pieces look interesting on their own, so that they can be displayed as part of an installation and speak for themselves.

When thinking of anatomy, one thinks of the dead (cadaver being dissected) or a static image. I wish to challenge and change this. I aim to bring anatomy to life, capture the motion and show the beauty of the body. I see this as an opportunity to show anatomy as less gruesome and instead more glamorous. Project Points: Make the invisible -> visible Exaggerate and reveal motion Appreciate and celebrate the human body Educational both for myself and others Anatomy is a craft in itself and I wish to combine my own knowledge of textiles and tailoring with the surgery of dissection.

I see these pieces being worn by performers / dancers / people in touch with their own bodies. My target audience is the general public as well as anyone interested in costume, craft, the body and it’s internal workings, electronics, movement & making. I wish to engage the audience by producing a visual extravaganza that is interactive, interesting & well made (both traditional and advanced technology) which is hopefully thought-provoking, inspiring and makes people think & appreciate their own bodies.

In the future I also wish to collaborate with people in other fields, such as photographers, videographers, set designers, make-up artists and sound producers.

I really loved my learnings at Fabricademy and I wish to incorporate as much as I can of the various weeks & elements into my project. Material wise, I will work with reliable fabrics and similar materials to what I have used over the course. With this I will also incorporate electronics - using what we have used in the lab and also expanding it further to achieve what I want. Machines I will plan to use the laser cutter, 3D printers, heat press & sewing machine.

Experimenting with: - Movement - Materials - Techniques

Over the years I have become quite obsessed with Life Drawing and subsequently, Anatomy. I initially started drawing my fashion and costume designs. I felt the illustrations could have been stronger if I learnt more about life drawing - what is under the clothes ? Hence, I spent the last few years drawing hundreds of life models (both in person and online). Then I felt my drawings would be better if I learnt about Anatomy - what is under the skin ? Now, I would like to combine all of these elements together. Inspired by my own life drawings & observation of the body both in real life and through images.

Inspired by the ‘folding out’ of old Medical Encyclopedias, I decided I wanted to incorporate this idea into my project. Hence, I decided to show the layers of a body.

Looking in particular at the: - Skin - Muscles - Skeleton
