Bill of materials

To create my own biomaterials and biochromes, I made several BOMs.

BOM for polyblend alternative leathers

BOMs for making tannin and biochrome extracts as a base for bioplastics

BOM for polyblend bioplastics

BOM for alternative whey leather and biochrome bath for colouring

BOM for ice-dyeing hemp fabric

Story telling

A historical, philosophical, spiritual, scientific, practical, and ecological journey by a cheesemaker through her beloved polder.

Video script

There are a lot of different layers in my project. For the video I will focus on the more conceptual and emotional layers, namely the historical, philosophical, and spiritual layers. In order to tie all the layers together it has to become a very personal story. It's me and my perspective on the world that I express in the video.

Storyline

The story is about Marieke, who became a cheesemaker in rural Lopik, an area with centuries old history. While trying to find a useful solution for whey, a waste product from cheesemaking which is dumped daily into the sewage system, she delves into, gets fascinated by, and gets emotionally connected to the Lopikerwaard polder and its history. Lessons from the Lopikerwaard’s past and concerns about the future drive her to a new way of thinking, and new solutions.

My storyline with a clear beginning, a middle, and end:

Beginning

  • Marieke becomes a cheesemaker ...
  • And wants a solution for the whey wastewater stream.

Middle

  • Marieke learns about and connects to the Lopikerwaard polder history.
  • Develops a deep respect and personal emotional connection to this land, its history, the generations before her, and rural lifestyle.
  • Parallel she has concerns about the area’s future and next phase in its development. Dairy farming is under attack due to its impact on nature.
  • Society is polarized between those who believe that:

    • Humans and nature are in conflict, and
    • Humans and nature co-exist in harmony.

End

  • She finds out about, focusses on and shares the story of the Matronae, the Triple Goddess of which remnants were found in the area. And how that influenced the world view of inhabitants in the past.
  • Her central theme becomes the thought that harmonious co-existence between humans and nature is a MUST for a next fertile future.
  • She visualizes this belief by making her own triple Goddess, the Matronae Lopica, expressed in three dresses which have been produced from whey wastewater and polder waste streams, such as pruning from willow trees, fruit, and cuttings from grasslands.
  • Her triple Goddess represent, embody, and protect the combined energy of man and nature in the Lopikerwaard.
  • The film finishes with a poem.
