11 Implications / applications

Introductions

This week is all about planning and thinking of the final project we want to create for Fabricademy. I decided firstly to make a board of all of my journey in a new program called (Miro)[https://miro.com/app/dashboard/] so I could see all of the projects side by side to see the relationships between all of the reasearch and outcomes side by side and how they interact with one another

Circulab

Part of the lectures this week was an extremely confusing mass deep dive into Circulab. I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I feel like a little more preparation for this would be required as this whole process just freaked me out and made me way less confident in my project planning going forward but I tried to participate as best I could.

The Iceland Problem

As I tried to explain in week 3 I feel that living in Iceland creates a unique set of issues in circularity as compared to less remote, more populated places on the mainland of any continent. The circular economy and zero waste movements have been very slow to take off in Iceland but it is gathering momentum. Iceland has some unusual issues to deal with in this context in my opinion

  • Its an island nation so the footprints of products going in and out is huge.
  • It is very inhospitable to grow any of the raw materials here.
  • There is no small scale industry so what little raw materials we have are shipped off island and the finished products are then shipped back in. Most "Icelandic" textile products are made in Lithuainia or the far east.
  • There is a sense of apathy due to the use of "renewable" Geothermal and Hydro power, so recycling or reusing products is done infrequently.
  • There isn´t a viable green transportation plan in place, nor will the borgalinur probably ever be finished in 2030.
  • Tax on imports and exports are so high that the economy is kinda self contained here. You fly somewhere to shop and bring products back as its way cheaper and generally quicker than shipping it here.

All over these particular issues will have to be taken into account at a very local level in terms of my projects success.

Who? / Why? / Where? / What?

The Hearty Party is an interactive awareness project centered on the heart and heart disease which is the largest cause of death in Iceland. I had a heart attack in June and this was the experience that put me here, now, on my Fabricademy journey. All of my projects during this journey so far have centered on the heart and cardiac issues and this is the input that is going into this final piece.

The Hearty Party will be an interactive wearable using the heart in different ways.

  • Heart data will form the basis of an exploration in computational parametric design. This data information will be used to create new forms and 3D surfaces in moulded fish leather.
  • These fish leather pieces will form a visual representation of the heart outside the body. The aim is to visualise the heart in other ways in a form of display involving light.
  • The sound of the heart will be isolated and used in an interactive way forming another dialogue between the inner and outer world. Heart sounds are soothing and comforting. if the heart could speak what would it say?
  • What does the heart feel like? The project will also explore the tactile interactions of this inner and outer world.

This will be a wearable piece that the user will interact with using fish leather, a local resource. I have lived in Iceland for 10 years so I want the project to be based close to home but as this will be a fully open source project I hope that it could be replicated worldwide.

I hope that the exploration I make in computational design, wearable tech and fish leather research will lead to future buisness ideas post Fabricademy.

I also hope that this project will highlight and inspire a dialogue surrounding heart disease and its issues. I would also like to bring a little fun and joy to those affected by this issue as I have been.
