Ressources of the week

Research & Ideation

This week is dedicated to biomaterials, an exploration towards alternatives to chemical materials and the life cycle of the product.

Cecilia Raspanti was our instructor, she teaches to us some keys. Some extract of the course about this week

Overview

References & Inspiration

Design, if it wants to assume its ecological and social responsibilities, must be revolutionary and radical. It must claim for itself the principle of the least effort of nature, doing the most with the least. Victor Papanek

Victor Papanek's work combines respect for the environment with the observation of natural phenomena as a source of inspiration for intelligent systems. He is one of the first thinkers of eco-design. Avant-garde, he wrote in 1971 his manifesto "Design for the real world", in which he disapproved of industrial products that he considered ill-adapted, futile and useless. He was interested in all aspects of design and their impact on the environment and people. According to him, the most important aspect of design is its relationship with people. A pioneer in eco-design, he was the first to announce the necessity and urgency of considering environmental impacts such as life cycle and recycling in the design process.

Nienke grew up near the beach, her connection to the ocean was the foundation of the research into seaweed and fish skin. In the project SEA ME the studio researches how seaweed can contribute to a more sustainable textile industry. Although the research is ongoing, the findings were published in the books ‘Seaweed Research’and ‘Fish Leather’. Source

Between Crafted and Grown

Gardening: Garden of Eden

We made research with Marion Banon, Laora Guillerm, Lauriane Beaumont about conductive biomaterials and the project Gardening: Garden of Eden. She already made amazing documentation and for not making a double I prefer to be focusing and others subjects.

Garden of Eden made with the team

Our goal was to grow plants into biomaterials. We thinking about what the plant like, like a cofee grounds, egg shell, spiruline... This experience is between crafted and grown.

The results was not succesful.
